Dan Sheffield

Biography

Dan Sheffield was born and spent his formative years in the rugged and multi-ethnic world of Northern Ontario. High school years were spent in the Napanee area of Eastern Ontario . He lived for a year near the Vancouver Island fishing village of Bamfield, BC and another three years on the flat prairie south of Winnipeg (Providence College, B.A. in Biblical Studies 1988). Dan has worked as a bookstore clerk in Montreal, newspaper reporter, graphic artist, guitar teacher, Christian camp counselor and programme director, as well as founder/director of a social housing company. Following his marriage to Kathy in 1985 they lived in Hamilton Ontario, Egypt, South Africa, Niagara Falls, South Africa again and finally back to Hamilton in 2000. Dan completed a master’s degree in Religious Education at McMaster University (2001) and their family lives in the pulsing heart of downtown Hamilton.

Peoples, place, and culture are important factors in Dan’s life and ministry as he serves The Free Methodist Church in Canada as Director of Global and Intercultural Ministries. He also serves as Urban Ministry Facilitator with the international Free Methodist family. Dan's work involves researching, training leaders and developing resources that encourage the emergence of effective urban outreach, sensitive intercultural communication, and holistic ministry in Canada and around the world. He works internationally alongside both missionaries and national leaders, as well as with Canadian churches developing local church-based global involvement.

Dan has written two books, The Multicultural Leader (2005) and Conversations That Change Us (2007) with Dr. Joyce Bellous.

Dan and his wife, Kathy served as missionaries in South Africa, working in multicultural church planting and community development from 1994 to 1999. From 1991 to 1994 Dan served as Associate Pastor for Discipleship and Evangelism at Queensway FMC in Niagara Falls, ON. They have two children, Jamila (1986) and Jared (1992).

They attend Buchanan Park FMC in Hamilton, Ontario.
